Lin Chuangui, courtesy name Shouchang,  was a descendant of Lin Zhanmei, and one of the most important calligraphers in Hsinchu, from 1930 to 1960. He was repeatedly selected for the Taito Shodokai Exhibition in Japan and served as a director and supervisor of the Chinese Calligraphy Association. His calligraphy style has been widely admired and even referred to as the "Shouchang style." It is commonly seen in Hsinchu as shop signs or inscriptions for local businesses.

This couplet was presented by Lin Shouchang to the renowned painter Zeng Yulan in Hsinchu. The calligraphy style features square outer shapes and circular inner forms, influenced by the calligraphic style of Zhang Yuzhao (1823-1894) that was popular during the late Qing dynasty.
