Handwritten letter, 1843

Chen Yaochu

寄2023-1649 清新竹線儒學陳耀初致家土學弟手札.jpg

This letter is believed to have been written in 1843.  Hu Zhaoyou, a tribute student(貢生), founded the Ming-Chih Collage(明志書院) first in Taishan, and later relocated the college to Tek-chhàm and transformed it into a county school, becoming the leading educational institution in Northern Taiwan.  The College was destroyed in 1895 when Japan took over Taiwan.

This letter is written by Chen Yaochu, a teacher at the Ming-Chih College, to a new teacher.  It vividly depicts the interactive dynamics between teachers and students in the College. It is a precious document that provides insight into the educational practices of Tek-chhàm in the mid-19th century.
