Lin Zhanmei, also known as Xuecun, was the grandson of Lin Shaoxian, a wealthy figure from Tek-chhàm. During his youth, he traveled throughout China, which sparked his interest in poetry and painting. He excelled in landscape and flower-and-bird painting and was also skilled in calligraphy. He often hosted gatherings at his private garden called Qian Garden completed in 1864,  which were renowned as major cultural events in northern Taiwan and also attracted visits of Chinese calligraphers and painters as well.

This painting was likely to be created by Lin Zhanmei in Qian Garden in the Fall of 1867. The painting depicts peonies and narcissus, symbolizing auspiciousness and elegance, and it may be a rare surviving artwork by Lin Zhanmei.
