Lin Xizhou, whose original name was Lianshui, often signed his works as Lin Xizhou.  He was endowed with an official title for his contribution to the Sino-Franch War in 1884. He passed the imperial examination in 1894, but the change of Taiwan's governance to Japan in 1895 rendered his achievements futile.

Lin Xizhou excelled in painting flowers, birds, and figures. The renowned Tek-chhàm painter Fan Yaogeng received guidance from him, but unfortunately, many of Lin Xizhou's works have not survived. This artwork focuses on the theme of flowers and birds, which is a subject the artist excels in portraying.
