Zheng Jiazhen, a native of Dongshi Village outside of Tek-chhàm City, achieved the title of juren (舉人) in the imperial examination in 1894. He moved to Fujian, Mainland in 1895, after Taiwan was ceded to Japan.  He returned Hsinchu in 1919 teaching at his privat classroom, and then went back to Fujian again in 1927. Zheng Jiazhen excelled in poetry, prose, and calligraphy. He was a member of the Tek-chhàm Poetry Society and also co-founded the Gengxin Poetry Society (耕心吟社) with Hsinchu students. 

 

This work of Su Shi's poem "Visiting Jingshan Temple," was dedicated to Zeng Yulan. Throughout Zheng Jiazhen's life, he shuttled between Hsinchu and Fujian, teaching and writing. When he wrote "I try to climb the summit and gaze upon my homeland," it may also reflect his sentiment.
