Huang Yuzhu (1823~1883), courtesy name Hushan, was a native of the Tanshui Ting in Taiwan. In 1855, he achieved success in the provincial-level civil examination (鄉試) and was selected for an official position in Guangxi. In his early years, Huang Yuzhu received education under Zheng Yongxi and was highly regarded by Zheng.
Huang Yuzhu was skilled in painting bamboo and pine trees. The inscription on this ink bamboo painting indicates that he studied this genre under Yun Shouping (1633-1690), a renowned painter from the early Qing Dynasty. Yun Shouping was known for his elegant and graceful style, characterized by a sense of serenity and simplicity. However, in Huang Yuzhu's painting and poem, he sought to depict the vigor of bamboo standing resilient in the face of strong winds and harsh snowstorms, rather than simply emulating Yun Shouping's style. This suggests that Huang Yuzhu's work is a product of his personal artistic interpretation rather than a direct imitation of Yun Shouping's composition.
