Wei Qingde / Letter to Lai Ziqing in 1924
Wei Qingde, with the courtesy name Run-an, was a native of Hsinchu. During the Japanese colonial period, he was a renowned journalist, poet, and novelist. In 1910, Wei Qingde joined the Taiwan Daily News as a Chinese-language journalist. He actively participated in literary activities in Taiwan and was a member of several poetry societies, and also a founding member of the "Ying Society," one of the three major poetry societies in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period.
During gatherings of these poetry societies, it was common to create commemorative stationery for members, often in the form of letters. This particular letter was produced as a memento for the "First Session of Gepo Recitation" held by the Ying Society in 1924. The recipient of this letter was Wei Qingde's colleague at the newspaper and fellow member of the Ying Society, Lai Ziqing, who hailed from Chiayi. This letter not only serves as an artifact of the literary activities within poetry societies during the Japanese colonial period but also reflects the exchanges and friendships among intellectuals of that time.
