Han Tou Tuo / Upholding Vimalakirti Sutra in the Dharma-Ending Age
Han Tou Tuo
Display size:58 X 125.7 cm
Collection Number:2014-1-0225
The calligrapher signs as Han Tou Tuo (estimated late 19th century and early 20th century) and his seal bears the characters Zhi Yuan. It's possible that he was a monk named Shi Zhi Yuan who came to Taiwan twice for missionary work, engaging in poetic exchanges with the renowned Taiwan writer Lien Ya-tang.
The "Master of the Xingyuan" inscripted is presumed to be Zhou Weijin, a descendant of the founder of the Chinese Buddhist Vegetarian Hall "Zheng Shan Tang" in Hsinchu. He is one of the "Three Friends of Pine, Bamboo, and Plum," along with Fan Yao-geng and Zheng Xiangpu, and had close ties with the "Southern Yen Buddhist Association." The semi-cursive script horizontally displayed is believed to have been written by Monk Shi Zhi Yuan during his missionary work in Taiwan or during his interactions with the Buddhist community on the island.
