Shi Taixu (1890-1947), a native of Zhejiang, was a renowned Buddhist Master of the Linji school and a philosopher, advocated for a Buddhist revolution throughout his life.

 

Master Shi Taixu visited Taiwan from October to November, 1917, followed by a trip in December the same year to Japan. On December 14, 1917, Master Shi Taixu wrote this piece upon the invitation of Mr. Zhuang Yubo, a Tainan native engaged in business in Kobe, Japan. Master Shi Taixu presented the artwork as a gift to Mr. Zeng Guijiao, who later became the first librarian of the Hsinchu City Library in 1948.
