Mobile Educational Reactor (THMER) Model

Reestablished in 1956 under President Yi-chi Mei, National Tsing Hua University developed nuclear science in the spirit of the global Atoms for Peace initiative. THMER embodied this vision—extending scientific knowledge into the public sphere. This history also resonates with Hideki Yukawa’s later reflections on science and peace.
The Tsing-Hua Mobile Educational Reactor (THMER) first achieved criticality in 1975 and operated 968 times before its decommissioning in 2003. As a small, low-power research reactor fueled by U-235, THMER was designed for teaching and demonstration. Mounted on trailers, it could travel to different locations, bringing hands-on nuclear science education beyond the laboratory.
