【說明】
學海書院建於道光22年(1842)，是清代臺北盆地重要的書院之一，位於今日台北萬華區。初名「文甲書院」，後來由閩浙總督劉韻珂賜名「學海書院」。書院是士子學習儒家經典以及習作八股文的場所，書院山長除了授課外，也要定時督責士子習作八股文。
本件課題為「必也聖乎」，撰寫於紅格線內的文字為學生「陳仰成」所作，字體工整，另一筆跡為山長批改的痕跡。本件破題與承題之處，雖然被山長大幅修改，評語卻稱讚其「開講一起，題神題理，兩兩俱到。」透過有經驗者的指導，士子不僅熟悉論事的理路，同時也熟悉作文的方法。
【Description】
The Hsueh Hai Academy was established in 1842 during the Qing dynasty, located in present-day Wanhua District, Taipei. It was initially named "Wen-jia Academy" and later renamed by the Governor-General of Fujian and Zhejiang. The academy was a place for scholars to study Confucian classics and practice writing the eight-legged essay. The headmaster not only taught but also supervised the students' essay writing.
This assignment was written by the student Chen Yancheng. The headmaster's comments praised the work, noting that the student grasped the spirit and principles of the topic, demonstrating both substance and style. The guidance from experienced instructors helped the scholars become familiar with argumentation and essay writing.
