本作內容節錄自《易經》中的名句，同時也是清華大學校訓的由來。1914年，梁啟超到清大演講，他以《易經》乾卦與坤卦的象辭：「天行健，君子以自強不息」與「地勢坤，君子以厚德載物」，期許清華學子努力進取，修養品德，成為真正的君子。演講激勵了當時的學生，也因此讓「自強不息，厚德載物」成為清大的校訓。
本幅書者張厲生（1901-1971）曾任行政院副院長、駐日大使等職。其書法主要以學習唐代楷書為主。這件作品字體結字外鬆內緊，具虞世南、歐陽詢之筆意。
This piece features a famous excerpt from the I Ching (Book of Changes), from which National Tsing Hua University’s motto originates. The university’s motto comes from these renowned lines in the I Ching. In 1914, Liang Qi-chao delivered a speech at Tsing Hua, citing the hexagram texts of Qian (Heaven) and Kun (Earth):
As heaven maintains vigor through movements, a gentleman should strive for constant self-improvement.
As earth’s inclusive nature, a gentleman should embrace social responsibilities.
Liang’s speech encouraged students to pursue excellence and cultivate moral character, inspiring the adoption of " constant self-improvement and virtuous social commitment" as the university’s motto.
The calligrapher, Chang Li-sheng (1901–1971), served as Vice Premier of the Executive Yuan and Ambassador to Japan. His calligraphy, rooted in the Tang dynasty’s regular script tradition, reflects the stylistic influences of Yu Shi-nan and Ouyang Xun, characterized by a structure that appears outwardly open yet inwardly compact.
