【Description】

Pan Chengqing, courtesy name Qiaojiang and style name Qiaogang, was a native of Zhilan Fort, Danshui County. At 16, he studied under the renowned scholar Chen Weiying, well-versed in classical texts and became Juren in 1875. He was skilled in calligraphy, particularly in the running script.

This work features initial strokes often employing the concealed point technique, lending a sense of strength to the relatively slender structure. The strokes of characters like "ding(定)" and "geng(更)" exhibit clear clerical script influences with an expansive quality, revealing the artist's expressive intent. The inscription is more delicate and graceful, reflecting the elegance of the model-book style, showing a clear contrast in sentiment. This suggests Pan's dual mastery of both stele and model-book traditions, influenced by the late Qing dynasty's reverence for the ancient scripts of seal and clerical styles.
