【Description】
Starting in the 1870s, the Qing government began sending students abroad for education to support the Self-Strengthening Movement. After the abolition of the imperial examination system, studying abroad became a key path for scholars. Japan, due to its proximity, became a popular destination. By 1906, the number of Chinese students in Japan had surged to 17,860. These students significantly influenced China's modernization in various fields, including technology, law, finance, and revolutionary theory, etc.
This exhibit features a 1909 certification from the Chinese Embassy in Japan, verifying the enrollment of Zhao Huai from Shandong Province. Zhao, part of this wave of students, studied and graduated from the General Department of Tokyo Kōbun Gakuin between November 1906 and February 1908.
