Luo Jia-lun/ Cursive Calligraphy Scroll: “Soaring Aspiration”

釋文：振衣千仞岡，濯足萬里流，為人不可無此心胸。海闊縱魚躍，天空任鳥飛，為人不可無此氣度。珠藏川自媚，玉蘊山含輝，為人不可無此修養。振海先生雅命。羅家倫書於南京。​​​​

以行草書寫的三句箴言，分別源自《晉．左思．詠史詩八首之五》、宋阮閱《詩話總龜前集．三十二卷．引〈古今詩話〉》，及晉陸機《文賦》。整體筆勢俊逸挺秀，筆畫間婉轉流暢，提按起伏富於變化。就其內容而言，無不傳遞為人處世，應具備高尚品格與內在修養的意涵。

作者羅家倫（1897-1969）為國立清華大學的首任校長。1928年9月18日，羅家倫在清華大學的就職演說中，便以此勉勵清華學子：「有學問的人，要有『振衣千仞岡，濯足萬里流』的胸襟；要有『珠藏川自媚，玉蘊山含輝』的儀態，處世待人，才能受人尊敬。」

This piece features a flowing cursive script rendering of three aphorisms drawn from classical texts: Ode to History by Zuo-si of the Jin Dynasty, Collected Poetry Anecdotes by Ruan Yue of the Song Dynasty, and On Literature by Lu Ji of the Jin Dynasty.The calligraphy exudes elegance and dynamism, with fluid strokes that demonstrate a refined interplay of tension and release. The content conveys a profound message on the virtues of character, magnanimity, and self-cultivation.

 

Luo Jia-lun (1897–1969) was the first president of National Tsing Hua University. In his inaugural speech on September 18, 1928, he inspired Tsing Hua students with these very lines:

"A scholar must possess the expansive vision of ‘shaking one’s robes upon a lofty ridge and cleansing one’s feet in a boundless stream.’ One must carry oneself with the dignity of ‘pearls shining as they flow in the river and jade radiating brilliance within the mountains,’ for only then can one earn the respect of others."
