Kitashirakawa-no-miya Yoshihisa / Six-character Running Script, 1887

Kitashirakawa-no-miya Yoshihisa (1847-1895) was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army. In 1895, he was appointed to lead the formal takeover of Taiwan but died during the campaign. His death came to symbolize Japan’s conquest of Taiwan. He was later enshrined as the principal deity of Taiwan Shrine and Tainan Shrine.
This calligraphy, written in 1887 while he was a major general, features a moral maxim drawn from Shishuo Xinyu: “Let righteousness be your abundance, and loyalty and forgiveness your treasures.” The composed brushwork reflects his calligraphic training and personal self-discipline.
