The First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895), known in Chinese as the “Jiawu War” and in Japan as the "Japan–Qing War," marked a pivotal shift in East Asian geopolitics. For Japan, the war was a critical step toward militarism; for China, the loss of territory prompted urgent calls for reform and national strengthening. Taiwan, meanwhile, was ceded to and became a Japanese colony with profound and lasting consequences.
The year 2025 marks the 130th anniversary of the 1895 Yiwei War— fierce resistance of Taiwanese people against the Japanese occupation. In collaboration with the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Hsinchu County Government, this section of the exhibition focuses on themes related to the Yiwei War, featuring selected works from two past exhibitions: An Era of Transformation: The Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) Ukiyo-e Prints and Story of Tek-chhàm: Three Hundred Years Governance Two Hundred Years Cultivation.
