Jiang Shao-zu / Rubbing of the Stone Pillar Couplets from Longsheng Temple, Emei, Hsinchu

Authorized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Hsinchu County Government

This rubbing was taken from a stone pillar at Longsheng Temple in Emei, Hsinchu. The inscription was composed by Jiang Shao-zu (1876-1895), a renowned militia leader during the 1895 resistance against Japanese forces.

In 1889, the Jiang family donated land and local residents jointly raised funds for the construction of Longsheng Temple. Jiang Shao-zu contributed a pair of stone pillars and personally inscribed the couplet:“Let righteousness stand with mountains and rivers; Let loyalty shine with sun and moon.” The words reflect his heroism and unwavering dedication to defending his homeland.

The original stone pillars were donated to the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Hsinchu County Government by Longsheng Temple in 2023. The rubbing on display was produced and presented by the bureau.
