Anonymous / The Complete Song of Jiang A-yun

This manuscript is a long historical narrative poem, also known as the “Song of Jiang Shao-zu’s Resistance.” Spanning 5,824 characters, it was written by an anonymous author who identified themselves only as “a person from Beipu, Hsinchu.” Centered on the anti-Japanese resistance led by militia commander Jiang Shao-zu (1876–1895) in 1895, the poem portrays battles, local people and customs, and regional beliefs. Written in vernacular Chinese with traces of Hakka expression, the manuscript combines historical narrative with grassroots perspective, making it an important document for the study of Hakka militia culture and local memory.
