Li Xia was a native of Xianyou, Fujian, known for his paintings of historical figures and folk tales, as well as temple murals. Between 1928-1929, he was mainly active in Hsinchu, where he taught students like Zeng Yu-lan (1910-unknown) and Fan Kan-qing (1908-1952). In 1929, he was invited to serve as a judge for the exhibition held by the Calligraphy and Painting Enhancement Society.
This painting depicts the story of Zhang Liang (262 BC- 186 BC) picking up the shoe for Huang Shi-gong (dates unknown) and receiving his teachings on military strategy, which ultimately led to his great accomplishments. The painting’s expressive, vigorous brushwork reflects the bold stylistic legacy often associated with the “Min-Practice” (Fujian tradition).
