Tek-chhàm: The Cultural Heart of Northern Taiwan

Hsinchu was formerly known as Tek-chhàm. In the first year of the Yongzheng reign (1723), the Qing court established Tamsui Subprefecture in the area, marking the beginning of formal governance in northern Taiwan. A century later, in 1823, Cheng Yong-xi (1788-1858) became the first Taiwanese to pass the imperial jinshi examination. His feat sent waves of joy across Taiwan, immediately catapulting Tek-chhàm as the city of scholarly achievements. The Cheng family went on to make lasting contributions to education, playing a vital role in cultivating talents across northern Taiwan.
This section features selected objects from two past thematic exhibitions on Hsinchu: Hsinchu: A Stage for Stories and Story of Tek-chhàm: Three Hundred Years Governance, Two Hundred Years Cultivation.
