款識：
我原遷家到玉山，離情拋柳在人間。
葫蘆背伴騎驢過，莫㦬凡塵日日閒。
戊辰孟春新竹陳心授。時年六十八叟。
陳心授(1862-1933)，字道宗，新竹人。早年研習儒學，1888年入仕為吏，乙未割臺後曾任憲兵隊通譯；1898年後轉而從商。晚年專攻書畫，尤其擅長佛道人物題材，亦與李霞(1871-1938)、趙藺(生卒年待考)等人交遊，活躍於新竹畫壇。本作描繪挑行李的老人，與騎驢女子同行，似為攜家遷徙。畫中題詩寓意歸隱避世，亦流露畫家歷經政局變遷與幾次身分轉換後，對世情的感懷與尋求內在安頓的心境。
Chen Xin-shou (1862-1933), courtesy name Dao-zong, was a native of Hsinchu. He studied Confucianism, served briefly as a government clerk. Following the cession of Taiwan in 1895, he turned to business. In his later years, he focused on painting and calligraphy, especially Daoist and Buddhist figures, and was active in the Hsinchu art scene.
This 1928 painting shows an elderly man carrying luggage alongside a woman on a donkey—likely a scene of relocation. The inscribed poem suggests a desire to retreat from worldly affairs, echoing the artist’s shifting roles and search for inner peace.
